Debate Update: Awards in British Parliamentary Debate Tournaments
This semester the Vanderbilt University Debate Team expanded opportunities for students to compete in debate. For the first time in the history of Vanderbilt, students participated in British Parliamentary Debate and attended tournaments at the University of Vermont and the University of Miami.
From November 2–4, the debate team participated at its first ever British Parliamentary Debate tournament at the University of Vermont. Competing against students from the University of Vermont and other schools, including Bard, Columbia, Cornell, McGill, and the United States Air Force Academy, and from around the world, including Canada, China, and Palestine, the team won 3 awards:

First Place English as a Second Language Team – Peixuan (Ancher) Li and Yuhan Gao
Finalists in Novice (Top 4 Team) – Peixuan (Ancher) Li and Yuhan Gao
The team built on this initial success at the University of Miami. Competing against students from the University of Miami and other schools, including SEC rivals from the University of Mississippi and the University of South Carolina, the team again won 3 awards:
Varsity Division Tournament Champions – Erich Remiker and Sahil Soni (This team had a perfect tournament. They were the first-place team by unanimous ballot in all seven of their debates over the course of the weekend. In addition, as noted below, they were also named the first and second best speakers of the tournament).
Top Speaker – Erich Remiker
2nd Speaker – Sahil Soni
The debate team will look to continue its success next semester at the University of Utah, Cornell University, Regis University, and at the United States Universities Debating Championship hosted by Clemson University.
