Mellon Professor in the Humanities at a ceremony led by Vanderbilt Chancellor Daniel Diermeier and Provost Cybele Raver. Dr. Sloop was just one of two recipients from the College of Arts and Science to receive this distinction. It is also the first time that a faculty member from the Department of Communication Studies has been recognized with such an honor. He is also the editor of two collections, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Judgment-Calls-John-Sloop\/dp\/0367316463\">Judgement Calls: Rhetoric, Politics, and Indeterminacy<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mapping-Beat-Popular-Contemporary-Theory\/dp\/1577180771\">Mapping the Beat: Popular Music and Contemporary Theory<\/a>. <\/em>Professor Sloop\u00a0was also the editor of the communication studies journal <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/toc\/rccc20\/current\">Communication and Critical\/Cultural Studies<\/a><\/em> from 2007-2009.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Sloop received his B.S. in Media\/Advertising from Appalachian State University in 1985 and worked the following year at a full service marketing firm in Chapel Hill, NC. From 1986-1988, he worked on his Master\u2019s in Speech Communication at the University of Georgia. From 1988-1992, he was at the University of Iowa, where he received his Ph.D. in Communication Studies.
