Application Materials
When applying, please include:
- Cover Letter (no more than 2 pages)
- CV (no more than 5 pages)
- Research statement (up to 1,000 words) demonstrating commitment to and experience with interdisciplinary research in the humanities
- One-page timeline outlining the major scholarly activities you will pursue over the course of the three-year fellowship (e.g., book manuscript, articles)
- Teaching statement (up to 500 words) with evidence of teaching effectiveness and interest in innovative, interdisciplinary, and immersive approaches
- Teaching evaluations, if applicable
- Three confidential letters of recommendation
- A writing sample (excerpt from your dissertation)
- If you are ABD: a letter from your dissertation adviser explicitly stating that you are expected to successfully defend your dissertation before May 1, 2027
Eligibility
- Successful candidates will have received a Ph.D. in the humanities or the humanistic social sciences after May 1, 2025.
- Applicants who are ABD must complete all degree requirements by May 1, 2027.
- Applications to work on creative endeavors and original compositions will not be considered.
- Candidates must already be eligible to work in the United States. Vanderbilt University will not offer visa sponsorship of any kind. Further inquiries regarding visa eligibility should be directed to Vanderbilt’s International Student & Scholars Office.
Applicant Evaluation
When evaluating applications, we give particular consideration to several factors, including the following:
- Overall strength of the application materials
- Whether Vanderbilt can provide strong mentoring opportunities for the applicant’s research
- Whether there are opportunities for teaching and engagement within relevant departments
- Whether the applicant’s interdisciplinary work would benefit from the collaborative environment at Vanderbilt
