During the fall and spring semesters, the Department of Classical and Mediterranean Studies hosted four distinguished visitors to Vanderbilt who are leaders in diverse fields within our discipline: Barbara Graziosi of Princeton University, who lectured on the poetry and persona of Sappho (October 27); Justin Leidwanger of Stanford University, who spoke about maritime archaeology, marine ecology, and coastal communities in Sicily past and present (November 18); Caroline López-Ruiz of the Ohio State University, who explored the widespread influence of the Phoenicians from the Near East to Iberia (February 22); and Kate Cooper of the University of London, who discussed women in the familial experience and narrative schemes of St. Augustine (April 21). Honored guests in the Annual Lecture Series spend several days on campus, meeting with faculty and students, discussing common interests, and brainstorming future collaborations. Stay tuned for scheduled events during the 2022-2023 academic year.
