{"id":1588,"date":"2022-02-28T14:18:03","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T14:18:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/clacx\/?p=1588"},"modified":"2022-10-05T14:57:26","modified_gmt":"2022-10-05T14:57:26","slug":"haitiweek-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/clacx\/2022\/02\/28\/haitiweek-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"CLACX hosts sixth annual Haiti Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vanderbilt&#8217;s Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latin Studies (CLACX) hosted its <a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/clacx\/2022\/02\/14\/haitiweek2022\/\">6th annual Haiti Week<\/a> February 22\u201324 to foster discussions about Haitian literature, culture, and immigration in historic and contemporary contexts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis week was an opportunity to reflect on the global reach of Haitian history and culture. We want students to know more about studying Haitian Krey\u00f2l at Vanderbilt, and the talks brought fresh light on current events around immigration and changing laws in the United States, as well as important new scholarship in Haitian studies,\u201d said CLACX Director Celso Castilho. \u201cLearning more about Haiti and the Haitian diaspora is as crucial as ever to understanding the Americas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judith Clerjeune, Campaigns and Advocacy Director of the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC), kicked off the week with a discussion of \u201cHaiti, Law, and Immigration\u201d moderated by Jes\u00fas Ruiz (National Academy of Sciences Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow). Clerjeune shared her personal immigration experience as a Haitian, and described her professional efforts leading TIRRC\u2019s national, statewide, and local campaigns around issues that impact immigrants and refugee communities. The virtual talk was attended by a nationwide audience and moderated by Gretchen Selcke, CLACX Assistant Director. Dorvil guided attendees in the preparation and tasting of the Haitian krema, a sweet beverage enjoyed during holidays. She also gave participants an introduction to Haitian culture, geography, and history, and a beginner\u2019s conversation class in Haitian Krey\u00f2l.<\/p>\n<p>Haiti Week 2022 contributed to Vanderbilt\u2019s Black History Month programming and was co-sponsored by the BCC, CSA, and CSLS, and organized by CLACX Outreach Coordinator Colleen McCoy.
