{"id":1261,"date":"2022-02-14T16:39:44","date_gmt":"2022-02-14T16:39:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/clacx\/?p=1261"},"modified":"2022-10-05T14:22:08","modified_gmt":"2022-10-05T14:22:08","slug":"haitiweek2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/clacx\/2022\/02\/14\/haitiweek2022\/","title":{"rendered":"CLACX announces 6th annual Haiti Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>Vanderbilt\u2019s 6<sup>th<\/sup> annual Haiti Week to begin Feb. 22<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Vanderbilt\u2019s Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies (<a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/clacx\/\">CLACX<\/a>), Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/bcc\/\">BCC<\/a>), Caribbean Students Association (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/csls\/\">CSA<\/a>), and Center for Second Language Studies (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/csls\/\">CSLS<\/a>) will host the 6<sup>th<\/sup> annual Vanderbilt Haiti Week Feb. 22-24.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis week is an opportunity to reflect on the global reach of Haitian history and culture. We want students to know more about studying Haitian Krey\u00f2l at Vanderbilt, and the talks bring fresh light on current events (law and immigration), as well as important new scholarship in Haitian studies (e.g., the period of the American occupation),\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/history\/bio\/celso-castilho\">Dr. Celso Castilho<\/a>, CLACX Director. \u201cLearning more about Haiti and the Haitian diaspora is as crucial as ever to understanding the Americas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haiti Week 2022 is part of Vanderbilt\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/bcc\/bhm-events\/\">Black History Month<\/a> programming and will feature scholars from Oberlin College and Vanderbilt University, as well as Vanderbilt\u2019s CSA student organization. Events will be a mix of in-person and virtual programming, and are open to the Vanderbilt community and the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout 800,000 of the over 1.7 million Haitians who have migrated in the last two decades live in Latin America (mostly the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Chile); the other 50% or so are in the US,\u201d said Castilho. \u201cThe futures of Latinx, Latin American, and Haitian studies are inextricably linked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Organized annually by Vanderbilt CLACX, Haiti Week first began in February 2017. The program has since featured a variety of academic lectures and cultural events, all open to the public. Speakers have included award-winning authors Edwidge Danticat and Ibi Zoboi, scholars from across the country, and Vanderbilt University students, faculty, and staff.<\/p>\n<h4>TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 22<\/h4>\n<p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1240 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-cas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2022\/02\/22135250\/JudithHeadshot-e1646773231135.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"145\" height=\"217\" \/>Haiti, Law, and Immigration<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n12:30 \u2013 1:30 p.m. CST |\u00a0<strong>In-Person<\/strong><br \/>\nBlack Cultural Center Auditorium, Vanderbilt University<\/p>\n<p>Haiti Week 2022 kicks off with this in-person talk by Judith Clerjeune (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tnimmigrant.org\/judith\">Tennessee Immigrant &amp; Refugee Rights Coalition<\/a>) on Haitian immigration, moderated by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/history\/bio\/jesus-ruiz?fbclid=IwAR0Dwa_LBPzicjkb-kggqvku7Nf8_0YOOneBHhjb_Ul3t9NxXROPCATlCDA\">Jes\u00fas Ruiz<\/a>\u00a0(National Academy of Sciences Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow). As TIRRC\u2019s Campaigns and Advocacy Director, Clerjeune leads the organization\u2019s policy priorities and campaign initiatives, advancing strategic national, statewide, and local campaigns around issues that impact immigrant and refugee communities.
