Conocido por muchos como Tat Wel, era una persona extraordinaria, un l\u00edder respetado por su comunidad y un maestro querido. Nacido el 19 de abril de 1960 de una familia K\u2019iche\u2019 en Nahual\u00e1, Guatemala, \u00e9l asisti\u00f3 al famoso Instituto Santiago en Ciudad de Guatemala y despu\u00e9s de graduarse fue maestro de escuela primaria por muchos a\u00f1os en el municipio de Nahual\u00e1. Despu\u00e9s de jubilarse, en colaboraci\u00f3n con la Universidad de Chicago fue como comenzaron sus asociaciones con otras universidades en Estados Unidos, como Vanderbilt, la Universidad de Kentucky-Lexington y UT Austin.<\/p>\n<p>Tat Wel empez\u00f3 a ense\u00f1ar K\u2019iche\u2019 en Vanderbilt en 2007, hasta que se postulara a la alcald\u00eda de Nahual\u00e1, donde sirvi\u00f3 como alcalde de 2012 a 2016. Siempre pensando en el bien de su comunidad, su logro m\u00e1s enorgullecedor durante su administraci\u00f3n fue planear y terminar proyectos de obras p\u00fablicas, como construir una carretera o proveer a<span style=\"font-size: 1.2rem\">cceso de agua potable, en cada pueblo y aldea del municipio de Nahual\u00e1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Por muchos a\u00f1os antes y despu\u00e9s de su t\u00e9rmino como alcalde, y hasta el d\u00eda de su muerte, Tat Wel fue el director y coordinador local para el Mayan Language Institute-K\u2019iche\u2019 en Nahual\u00e1. Un programa intensivo de verano para estudiantes estadounidenses organizado por un consorcio de Vanderbilt y la Universidad Tulane, MLI es dirigido por Mareike Sattler (la Universidad de Vanderbilt). Manuel fue fundamental en crear el programa nacional de Educaci\u00f3n Biling\u00fce en Guatemala y contribuy\u00f3 a la creaci\u00f3n del nuevo alfabeto de K\u2019iche\u2019. Fue un miembro fundador del Instituto Mixto \u201cOxlajuj No&#8217;j para maestros biling\u00fces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Luch\u00f3 por la ense\u00f1anza de K\u2019iche\u2019 en su pueblo y amablemente invitaba a su casa y a su comunidad a cualquier extranjero que quiso estudiar K\u2019iche\u2019 a trav\u00e9s de inmersi\u00f3n en un contexto local. La mayor\u00eda de los acad\u00e9micos, investigadores y estudiantes en <span style=\"font-size: 1.2rem\">Estados Unidos que estudian K\u2019iche\u2019 hoy en d\u00eda pueden rastrear el origen de su experiencia hasta \u00e9l. Manuel y su esposa Nan Xe\u2019p (Isabel) recib\u00edan a todos con los brazos abiertos y frecuentemente abr\u00edan las puertas de su casa a estudiantes y amigos. A lo largo<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.2rem\">\u00a0de los a\u00f1os, recibieron a muchos grupos de Vanderbilt con un almuerzo tradicional y un paseo del pueblo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Matthew Calderwood:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cAprender K\u2019iche\u2019 de Tat Wel fue una experiencia que nunca olvi<span style=\"font-size: 1.2rem\">dar\u00e9 y que fue formativa para mi carera. El programa de inmersi\u00f3n en Guatemala fue una experiencia que me cambi\u00f3 la vida y que nunca olvidar\u00e9. Tat Wel ten\u00eda mucho orgullo de lo que ense\u00f1aba y un gran amor para sus estudiantes. Aunque despu\u00e9s me enfoque en ling\u00fc\u00edstica computacional y el procesamiento de lenguaje natural, nunca he dejado de usar K\u2019iche\u2019 como mi base de toque ling\u00fc\u00edstica. El primer analizador sint\u00e1ctico que cre\u00e9 fue para el K\u2019iche\u2019 y mi primer intento (fallido) de dise\u00f1ar un sistema de reconocimiento de voz fue para K\u2019iche\u2019 tambi\u00e9n. Su pasi\u00f3n y su nobleza para K\u2019iche\u2019 Nahule\u00f1o fueron unas de sus caracter\u00edsticas como ser humano. Su mirada tranquila, su humildad para escuchar a sus estudiantes y su conocimiento tremendo de K\u2019iche\u2019 son una herencia para estudiantes y acad\u00e9micos mayas-guatemaltecos. Como estudiante maya, yo siempre recordar\u00e9 sus historias sobre movimientos sindicales, la historia de Nahual<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.2rem\">\u00e1 y que siempre me permit\u00eda sacar fotos de las costumbres del consumo de alimentos. Tat Wel, gracias por toda su sabidur\u00eda maya que compart\u00eda conmigo durante cada comida que tuve el privilegio de pasar contigo.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Querido Tat Wel en su memoria y legado nos deja a nosotros los Mayas-Guatemaltecos un tremendo compromiso con y hacia la poblaci\u00f3n Maya, para mejorar la calidad de servicios, fortalecimiento de identidad y el estudio estrictamente academico-cientifico de las cuestiones K\u2019iche\u2019. Born on April 19, 1960 into a K\u2019iche\u2019 family in Nahual\u00e1, Guatemala, he attended the renowned Instituto Santiago in Guatemala City, and after graduation worked as a primary school teacher for many years in the greater Nahual\u00e1 area. Without his involvement and support the summer program would not have been possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He was beloved as a deeply knowledgeable and patient teach<span style=\"font-size: 1.2rem\">er of K\u2019iche\u2019, the study of which its linguistics and cultural facets was very close to his heart. \u00a0Manuel was instrumental in creating the national Bilingual Education program in Guatemala and was one of the people involve d in preparing the new alphabet for K\u2019iche\u2019.\u00a0 He was a founding member of the Instituto Mixto \u201cOxlajuj No&#8217;j for bilingual teachers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He championed language instruction of K\u2019iche\u2019 in his own town, and warmly welcomed into his house and community any foreigner who wanted to study K\u2019iche\u2019 through immersion and in a local context.\u00a0 Most scholars, researchers and students in the US working in and on K&#8217;iche&#8217; nowadays can trace their own expertise back to him. Manuel and his wife Nan Xe\u2019p (Isabel), welcomed everyone with open arms and frequently opened their house to students and friends.\u00a0 Over the years, they hosted many groups from Vanderbilt for a traditional lunch, followed by a tour of the town.<\/p>\n<p><em>Matthew Calderwood:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cLearning K&#8217;iche&#8217; from Tat Wel was an experience that I will never forget, and one that was formative in my career path. The immersion program in Guatemala was a life changing experience, and one that I will never forget. Tat Wel had great pride in what he was teaching, and great love for his students. Even though I moved into computational linguistics and n<\/em><em style=\"font-size: 1.2rem\">atural language proc<\/em><em style=\"font-size: 1.2rem\">essing for my career, I never stopped using K&#8217;iche&#8217; as my linguistic touchstone. The first computerized sentence parser that I wrote was for K&#8217;iche&#8217;, and my first (failed) attempt at a speech recognition system was for K&#8217;iche&#8217; as well. I would not have the love for linguistics that I have today were it not for learning K&#8217;iche&#8217; and having Tat Wel as a teacher\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Miguel Cuj -Kel Xik\u2019-(Ph.D. Student. As a Maya student, I will always remember his history about union movements, Nahual\u00e1 history, and that he always allowed me to take pictures of food consumption practices.
