Visiting Speakers and Other Events
Connect with Vandy-in-Hollywood.
This month, in conjunction with the Vanderbilt Career Center and the VU Cinema & Media Arts Dept., we kick off our Vandy-in-Hollywood Virtual Screening & Speaker Series, featuring online screenings of features, shorts, and TV shows made by Vandy alumni and students… as well as interactive panels and speaker sessions with VU grads now working in entertainment.
This comes after the incredible response to this summer’s ViH Speaker Series. In previous summers, the speaker series has been an exclusive live event for VIH interns in L.A. This year, the pandemic forced us online, and we were finally able to invite the larger ViH community. Now, after such an enthusiastic response to the summer’s program, we’re able to include the entire Vanderbilt community… and also begin having online screenings and other events!
To kick off the series, we’re excited to announce our first event: a screening of writer/director Sam Friedlander’s (A&S, ’00) award-winning feature, Babysplitters, which is also the product of several other young Vandy filmmakers’ work!
Here’s the scoop:

Babysplitters — Winner of the 2019 Santa Barbara Int’l Film Festival, and a selection of over 15 film festivals worldwide, Variety called the movie “Deeply moving and thoroughly entertaining” and FilmThreat said it was “A true crowd pleaser full of warmth and insight”.
Writer/Director: Sam Friedlander
Starring: Danny Pudi (Mythic Quest, Community, Star Trek Beyond), Maiara Walsh (The Last Ship, Zombieland), Mark Feuerstein (Royal Pains), Emily C. Chang (The Vampire Diaries), and Eddie Alfano (Shameless)
The story follows Jeff (Pudi) and Sarah (Chang), a couple struggling to come to an agreement about having a baby. Jeff wants to be a father eventually but is afraid to lock himself into his current job situation. Meanwhile, Sarah, nearing 35, feels her biological clock ticking and is impatient to start trying. Friends of the couple, Don (Alfano) and Taylor (Walsh), have the opposite problem. Don has a successful business and is ready to be a dad, but Taylor, an aspiring dancer, is worried that the toll on her body and career will be too much. When the two couples hatch a plan to conceive and share one baby between them, it seems like they may have found the perfect compromise — until things spiral out of control.
