Students also receive an annual stipend ($40,000 for the 2026-27 academic year), which covers living expenses. The department pays the Student Service Fee on behalf of each student that provides access to the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center. Nominees must have achieved at least third year status and be in residence at the time of the award presentation.<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/biological-sciences\/graduate-awards-honors\/\">Ann Bernard Martin Award for Excellence in Graduate Research<\/a> &#8211; this award is presented annually to a graduate student of second or third year status who has demonstrated exceptional promise in research and scholarly activities in the early stages of their graduate career in biological sciences.<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/biological-sciences\/graduate-awards-honors\/\">Hickory Stick Award for Outstanding Teaching Assistan<\/a>t &#8211; presented annually to a graduate student who has done an outstanding job as a teaching assistant.<\/li>\r\n<li>Several other awards are presented to the best presenters at the Department of Biological Sciences Annual Retreat, these include: Gisela Mosig Best Presenter Award, Best Poster Award, Best Short Research-In-Progress Award, Best 3-Minute Thesis, Best Postdoc Talk.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/biological-sciences\/graduate-awards-honors\/\">View<\/a> previous awards winners here.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Federal Grants and Awards<\/h2>\r\n<p>Many of our students have been awarded their own extramural fellowships, including <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/notice-files\/NOT-OD-21-049.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NIH National Research Service Awards<\/a>, Pre-doctoral F31 Fellowships, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsfgrfp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NSF Graduate Research Fellowships<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Standard Financial Support Students in the Program of Biological Sciences receive full financial support from the College of Arts and Science, including full tuition and student health insurance.
