WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT VANDERBILT IN BERLIN 2004

THE PIONEERS

(THE FIRST PROGRAM GROUP)

These are some of Cat's digital photos. AND I found my old paper prints, digitized below!

Brittany Murray
and Cat (Elizabeth) Opderbeck

Cat (Elizabeth) Opderbeck:

"I got to know a beautiful foreign country while also studying in one of the most amazing (and historical) cities in the world.
I have made unforgettable friends who all started out as strangers and whom I probably would not have even encountered at Vanderbilt otherwise.

The best part was that I didn’t have to give up a semester at Vandy."

Brittany Murray
and Michael Cannamela

Michael Cannamela:

"Berlin is an interesting city in terms of juxtaposition: old and new, east and west, poor and wealthy.
It’s blessed with one of the best orchestras in the world and has two of everything.

I made a lot of new friends and got to know a part of Germany I might otherwise have dismissed as 'full of Prussians'"

Beth Guadagni, Bennett Golder,
Brittany Murray
Bennett Golder:

"Studying in Berlin was one of the best experiences of my life.
Never have I been to a more fascinating city than Berlin
--- in the past sixty years it has served as a capital to a fascist dictatorship, a communist “democracy,” and a modern democratic nation ---

the historical remnants of these periods of German history make the city unbelievably important.

The experience of living with other Vanderbilt students was great because I met and bonded with people I probably would not have otherwise met.

Berlin is quite simply my favorite place in the world. I wish I was there right now.”

Beth Guadagni, Bennett Golder, Geoff Threlkeld

Beth Guadagni:

"My experience in Germany studying the German language and German history was utterly unforgettable and has totally reshaped the way I see the world.
My friends and family are probably getting pretty tired of hearing my constant references to “the way they do things in Germany,” but I can’t seem to stop talking about it!

The program was just long enough for me to really feel at home in Berlin instead of feeling like a tourist.
As much as I enjoy taking German at Vanderbilt, I learned more doing little things like grocery shopping or navigating the public transportation system in Berlin than I have from any class."
