Chalene Helmuth is Coordinator of Spanish 100 and 101, and Director of the VISAGE program in Costa Rica.  Dr. Helmuth serves as Faculty Head of Sutherland House in the Ingram Commons.  She is the author of two books, Culture and Customs of Costa Rica, and The Postmodern Fuentes, on the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes.  Dr. Helmuth teaches courses in Spanish language, Latin American literature, and an interdisciplinary course on Global Citizenship and Sustainability.  Her teaching and research interests include Latin American narrative and identity, second-language studies, and the development of cultural competency in study-abroad contexts.Before joining Vanderbilt, Dr. Helmuth taught at Centre College and Furman University. She serves as Faculty Director of Vanderbilt/Tulane in Costa Rica (Summer 2015).
