Deadline for submission: Monday, March 25, 2013

The David Steine Economics and Business Award in the Managerial Studies Program honors the memory and distinguished career of David Steine, a professor held in the highest esteem by Vanderbilt alumnus James B. Johnson. The award, which has a cash prize of $1,000, recognizes a graduating student who shows exceptional promise for a business career and may be awarded to any graduating student from any of Vanderbilt’s four undergraduate schools who will graduate with one of the Managerial Studies minors.

Candidates for the award must submit a short paper explaining how and why Managerial Studies has enhanced their Vanderbilt experience and prepared them for a successful career. A committee of Managerial Studies faculty will select the best paper, taking into consideration whether the student’s academic record supports his or her arguments. Candidates should have an anticipated graduation date of Spring, Summer, or Fall 2013.

Papers should be submitted in .pdf form to linda.nagle@vanderbilt.edu by March 25, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. CDT. The winning student will be named in April.

On October 16, the “Will This Float?” business-plan competition, hosted by Vanderbilt Managerial Studies resulted in recognition for several talented student teams:

1st Place and the $300 Grand Prize was given to Zach Sherman and John Zhang for Giftbox, an app that simplifies gift-giving, allowing you to send electronic gifts (tickets, songs, coupons, video, photos, etc.) customized and personalized for the gift recipient.

2nd Place was a tie between Zach McCormick and Robert Newton’s Spot, a tech system that would help people more easily find and locate parking spots, and Michael Goldman’s UniverCity Deals, a card that would students and faculty at universities across the country to access deals and discounts at establishments in their areas.

3rd Place was given to Pictaview, a tech start up idea developed by Guy Kopsombut, that aims to facilitate the interactions between visual artist, venues, and patrons. Thank you to all of our participants.

“Will This Float?” was a very successful event that once again reminds us how many talented and innovative students we have at Vanderbilt.
