COURSE OUTLINE
Advanced German 302D is designed to refine and expand your German communication skills (speaking, listening, writing, reading). The course will introduce you to a more sophisticated use of vocabulary, and work through problems of stylistic expression. At the same time, the course will introduce you to a variety of cultural issues pertinent to contemporary Germany and help you learn to interpret and evaluate fictional and non-fictional materials.
German 302D examines how language in contemporary Germany is used so as to construct and contest individual and collective identities. In particular, the course focuses on how Germans make use of linguistic material in order to relate to each other, to understand reality and pursue their fantasies, to bridge or corroborate cultural differences, to define self and other, to assume and challenge power and authority, and to influence minds and manipulate emotions. Traversing a wide variety of textual genres and expressive media, the course thus sharpens our awareness for the power of language as much as for the many languages of power. It understands the German language as part of a larger context of cultural, political, economic, and social transactions, as a cultural practice enacted under the conditions of an increasingly global and multi-lingual society.
PROCEDURES
This class will be conducted entirely in German. Advanced German is a work-intensive course. Its success will depend on you and the amount of time you invest. Please be aware that attendance in both the master class and the discussion sections is crucial. Unexcused absences affect your grade in the performance and written homework category.
Some of the homework assignments require you to listen to prerecorded texts and interviews. In order to obtain a personal copy of the necessary materials, please ask the Meyer Language Lab to duplicate the German 302 master tape for you.

German 301D, the equivalent, or placement by examination
REQUIRED TEXTS
Required course materials will be available in a reader for purchase in the German Department, Ridgley 319. The following book is available for purchase at the Washington University Bookstore.

Your final grade will be determined by the following breakdown:
40% written homework (incl. 4 essays)
20% for two written exams

Essays are to be 2 pages (500 words) typed and double-spaced. We will average the grade for the first submission and the rewrite to determine your final grade for each essays. Late submissions will not be accepted. Submission dates are:
