What French Course Should I Take?
Information for students and advisers
For information regarding placement tests in French, please visit the Language Center (001 Furman Hall). To demonstrate proficiency in French, in order to meet AXLE requirements without taking a French course, please contact Todd F. Hughes (todd.hughes@vanderbilt.edu).

VU Placement Test Scores:
0-259 French 101a (2 years or less of French in high school)
260-349 French 102 (2-3 years of French in high school)
350-419 French 103 (3-4 years of French in high school)
420+ French 201w (4 years of French in high school)
SAT Placement:
0-500 French 101a
501-530 French 102
531-590 French 103
591+ French 201w
Advanced Placement (AP) Credit:
4 or 5 on French Language Exam = 8 hours credit for FR 103 & 201w
4 or 5 on French Literature Exam = 8 hours credit for FR 103 & 3 hours of elective
credit in Traditions or Intersections
International Baccalaureate (IB) Credit:
6 or 7 on subsidiary = 5 hours credit for FR 103
6 or 7 on higher = 5 hours credit for FR 103 plus 3 hours elective
credit in Traditions or Intersections
In Summary:
0 years of high school French or placement score of 0-260 = French 101a
Students who have completed 101a = French 101b
1-2 years of high school French or placement score of 260-349 = French 102
(102 is one-semester, accelerated first-year French)
3-4 years of high school French, placement score of 350-419, or
SAT score of 540-589 = French 103
4+ years of high school French, placement score of 420+, IB subsidiary score of 6 or 7, or SAT score of 590 = French 201w or higher
