Research Interests

My work focuses on traditions and modes of cultural heritage in the theater and philosophy of the Enlightenment. I have studied the reception of antiquity in 18th century theater in a book entitled:

Sombres Lumières, Essai sur le retour à l’antique et la tragédie grecque au XVIIIe siècle
(Les Presses de l’Université Laval, Les collections de la République des Lettres, 2010 )

I am currently working on a history of simplicity from the scientific revolution to postmodern theories of complex systems. My second book is provisionally titled Ages of Enlightenment: an essay on simplicity.

I have written articles on Rousseau, Crébillon père, d’Aguesseau, 18th century philosophy, early modern drama, and theater architecture.

Before coming to Vanderbilt, I taught for five years at Indiana University where I also served as Director of Graduate Studies. I have taught seminars on 17th and 18th century theater, dramatic theory, theater history, and on Rousseau.

I hold a PhD from Harvard (2004) in French literature and an Agrégation from La Sorbonne-Nouvelle (1996).
